On a constant quest to have a quirky, fun, daily drivable classic car I came across this: The VW Iltis. Some of you may remember it from their days in the glorious Bundeswehr as the Iltis is the predecessor of the current G-Klasse based Wolf. There are two versions of it: One with a 75hp gasoline engine and one with a 1,6l 70hp turbo diesel. Obviously I want that Diesel!!!

I find that car to be reasonably handsome and manly. It looks like the little brother of a G-Klasse. And if all that didn't make you lust after it, here is a fun fact that shows the importance of the Iltis to us Jalops: Upon test driving one of them babies, Jörg Bensinger, an engineer for Audi, went to yours truly Ferdinand Piech and told him to build a tiny little car that would later be known as the UR-QUATTRO!!!!! BOOM!!!

Anyway, I don't think I'd keep the military trim. I want to turn it into a classic roadster with creme/beige exterior and red leather interior and cruise around on a sunny day.

I actually tried dragging one when I was but an idiotic teen. I was driving a 1600-based VW Super Beetle, and the Iltis just trashed me - those things are pretty fierce!

They used to be a part of the Canadian Armed Forces auto fleet until some guys got killed driving them, and they got replaced with something huge, diesel-powered and massively up-armoured.

Thing is, they could still be useful, as they were never really meant for transport, per se, but more for scouting/reconnaisance. Damn shame.

Needless to say, if I ever have the money when one comes up for auction, I'll be all over it!

Well if you're from Canada you should find some army surplus vehicles, as far as I know Bombardier took over production after VeeDub stopped building the Iltis. Here in the old country I've seen a couple of cars in very good condition for around 5k€ - which I think is okay to spend on a fun weekend car with great daily driver capabilities.

The money is the show-stopper for me, but like I said, if the circumstances are just right, I'll have one in my driveway.
